In a town known for high achievement, scientific innovation, and busy schedules, local photographer Mike Brake is inviting the community to do something countercultural: slow down.

From now through April 30, Brake will be the featured artist at the Los Alamos Co-Op Market. The two-month exhibit will showcase a collection of landscape photographs from New Mexico and beyond, each one designed around a simple idea: creating space to breathe.

What began as sunrise shoots and evening hikes evolved into a deeper mission. The name “BrakeTime” is an intentional play on his last name and the concept of taking a break in the middle of a busy life.

“Whether it’s work, school, family, or just the pace of life, we’re constantly moving,” Brake said. “Photography became my way of stepping outside, finding joy in nature, and being present. That’s what I hope people feel when they see these images.”

The exhibit will feature a range of metal prints, canvas pieces, and framed photographs in various sizes and price points. All artwork will be signed and available for purchase directly through the Co-op, offering residents and local businesses an opportunity to bring a sense of adventure and relaxation into their own homes or workspaces.

An opening reception will take place Friday, March 6 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Los Alamos Co-Op Market. The event will feature live jazz music, ice cream, and refreshments. Guests are also invited to enjoy the Co-Op’s deli and café offerings during the reception.

The exhibit is located inside the Artist Café at the Los Alamos Co-Op Market and runs through April 30 including the co-op’s 15th birthday celebration event on Saturday, March 28.
