LAPS NEWS RELEASE
This month, school districts across the country recognize school board members for their volunteer service, leadership, and commitment to ensuring high-quality education in their districts as part of School Board Recognition Month. This year’s theme is “our future is public,” emphasizing the importance of public education and local
governance.
Los Alamos Public Schools would also like to take this opportunity to recognize the hard work and dedication of the LAPS School Board including President Sondra Wyman, Vice President Lauren Coupland, Secretary Melanie Colgan and new members Antonio Jaurigue and Margie Serrato.
“I am grateful for all of our dedicated school board members,” said Superintendent Jennifer Guy. “They are always focused on what is best for students. It is an honor to work with them.”
School board members are elected to a four-year term. While they are elected from one of five districts in the county, they are serving all school sites, students, staff and families.
School board members meet twice a month, but their obligations go beyond just attending school board meetings. They also participate on several committees, and are required to complete several hours of state training courses that explain state board rules, departmen policies and procedures, statutory powers and duties of local school boards, legal concepts pertaining to public schools, finance and budget and other matters deemed relevant by the New Mexico School Board Association.
