BY FATHER THEOPHAN MACKEY
St. Job of Pochaiv Orthodox
Los Alamos
Each December, the aroma of freshly baked cookies fills the halls of Saint Job of Pochaiv Orthodox Church in Los Alamos, marking the arrival of a cherished tradition: the annual holiday cookie box sale. In 2025, this event once again brought together the talents and generosity of our church members and the Los Alamos community.
Community Effort and Tradition
The cookie box sale is more than just a fundraiser; it is a celebration of community spirit and teamwork. Volunteers gathered in the church to bake and package an impressive variety of homemade cookies and treats. This year 125 boxes were lovingly assembled, full of baklava, koularakia, tea cakes, and others.
Many in Los Alamos look forward to supporting the cause and sharing the delicious treats with family and friends. The church’s gratitude extends to everyone who purchased a box, donated ingredients, or contributed their time and energy to make the sale a success.
Making a Difference Abroad
What sets the 2025 sale apart is its focus on international humanitarian aid. All proceeds, totaling over $4,000, have been sent to the national church, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA (UOC of USA). These funds are designated for humanitarian relief efforts in Ukraine, where the need remains urgent due to the ongoing invasion.
The UOC of USA has a longstanding commitment to supporting vulnerable populations in Ukraine, including orphans effected by the Chernobyl disaster and families affected by conflict and hardship. By channeling the proceeds from the cookie box sale to the national church, the Los Alamos community is helping to provide food, shelter, medical care, and hope to those facing these difficult circumstances.
A Legacy of Compassion
The annual cookie box sale at Saint Job of Pochaiv Orthodox Church has grown in both scope and impact. What began as a small fundraiser has blossomed into a beloved tradition that not only brings joy to local families but also extends compassion across borders.
Father Theophan and the people of Saint Job, wish to express their heartfelt thanks to the people of Los Alamos for their unwavering support and enthusiasm. Each cookie box sold is a testament to the power of community and the difference that can be made when people come together for a common cause.
As the tradition continues, Saint Job of Pochaiv Orthodox Church looks forward to many more years of baking, giving, and making a positive impact.
Archbishop Daniel on donations to Ukraine
Reflecting on this holy ministry, Archbishop Daniel reminds faithful that the Church’s humanitarian work is not just charity, it is theology in action.
“Weekly and monthly, aid continues to flow from our parishes and warehouses to devastated cities and burned villages. Food is reaching hungry hands. Water is being given to the thirsty. Clothing is warming those who have lost everything. Refugees are finding shelter, fleeing with only hope in their hearts.
“This is not just humanitarian work. This is the Gospel in action. This is Christ re-entering the suffering of the world through His Church.”
