BY BRYAN LEO FEAREY
Candidate for
UNM-LA Advisory Board
First, I would like to thank the League of Women Voters (LWV) for sponsoring the Candidate Forum last week. Please see “LWV Forum” for a summary.
I seek your vote so that together, we can strengthen UNM-LA as one of our bedrock community institutions (see: Fearey responses to LVM questions). My deep educational, policy experience, commitment to our community, and my prior board and committee work (YMCA, United Way of Northern New Mexico, Los Alamos Community Winds, Los Alamos Employees’ Scholarship Fund, etc.) will serve the UNM-LA Advisory Board well.
UNM-LA is a tremendous asset to Los Alamos, offering essential educational opportunities, whether to high school students, transition students, students seeking technical-certification or an associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or adult students seeking personal enrichment.
Importantly, there is an increasing demand for trades/certification training (welding, plumbing, electricians, nursing, dental technicians, etc.), which can be answered in part by UNM-LA, but must be balanced with core academics. I am excited at the prospect of being able to help Chancellor Mike Holtzclaw achieve this balance.
Lastly, I am pleased that UNM-LA succeeded in raising the Title V $250,000 match. Nevertheless, funding remains a significant challenge facing UNM-LA. Additional funds would offer increased flexibility, growth of new programs, etc. I can help the broader Los Alamos community understand the value of UNM-LA (and, hence financial support) through my deep community connections, whether from music (LACW, LASO, SaxAtomix), sports (golf, bowling, billiards), or science (LANL, TechSource).
I’d appreciate your vote for me for UNM-LA Advisory Board. If elected, I will work hard to ensure UNM-LA is a best-in-class institution.
