PEED NEWS RELEASE
New Mexico is home to a surprising variety of bat species, but these remarkable animals face growing challenges. The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) will host “Bats All Around Us”, a free program, 6-7 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Los Alamos Nature Center Planetarium with local bat biologist Milu Velardi.
The event is open to the public in person and online.
Velardi will introduce audiences to the bats that share our landscapes, explain how scientists study them, and discuss the threats they face, including the spread of White Nose Syndrome. Participants will gain a deeper appreciation for these vital yet often misunderstood animals.
About the Presenter
Milu Velardi works with Los Alamos National Laboratory’s biological resources team, focusing on threatened and endangered species as well as migratory bird research. She has also advanced local bat studies using acoustic recording technology.
