Northern New Mexico College is partnering with Art for the People to bring “Rooted Movements,” a multimedia art exhibit, to the Nick Salazar Center for the Arts Gallery Sept. 12 – Oct. 5, 2025. The exhibit will launch with a gallery opening from 5 – 8 p.m. Friday, September 12, with food, poetry and an open mic. On Saturday, Sept. 13, Art for the People will sponsor “Rooted Movements: Pláticas on the Continuum of Creative Traditions in Northern New Mexico” from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. followed by a community movement workshop led by Unbound Lineage at 7 p.m.
Rooted Movements is a multimedia art exhibition speaking to the creative practices of Northern New Mexico, including themes of tradition, cultural continuity and change, movement, community and healing from the past and the tensions therein. This exhibition explores the living traditions of Northern New Mexico and how art can be one way to discuss knowledge of the past, to bring people together, to grapple with and heal from the past and present.
“Pláticas on the Continuum of Creative Traditions in Northern New Mexico” brings together artists, organizers, scholars and other community members local to New Mexico to discuss the past, present and future of New Mexico’s creative practices. These discussions will be a series of open and informal roundtables, with audience participation encouraged. Roundtable panelists will include Dr. Myrriah Gómez, Dr. Sylvia Rodríguez and Elena Ortiz. There will also be music, poetry and a community feast with food provided. Attendees are invited to share a side dish or dessert if they wish.
