COUNTY NEWS RELEASE
The Los Alamos County Community Services Department (CSD) has acquired several robotic mowers from Husqvarna to test the effectiveness and efficiency of these battery-driven robotic mowers – they are like Roomba’s, but for grass!
“We are excited to bring this cutting-edge technology to Los Alamos,” said Community Services Director Cory Styron. “These mowers are expected to improve the turf health and allow for staff to work on other details in the landscape”.
The Husqvarna mowers have virtual boundaries instead of physical wires, allowing CSD to define several work areas with different settings and set temporary stay-out zones. Additionally, staff will have full control of the mower to monitor, view the status, exact location, and command them to start/stop or park. Features include setting the cutting heights, alarms, and tracking the mower’s position in case of theft. The electric component of the mowers is an additional benefit to the community as the County implements the Los Alamos Climate Action Plan.
The mowers feature a five (5) blade cutting disc that cuts a little grass at a time on a more frequent basis. The tiny clippings are recycled into the turf as a natural fertilizer, resulting in a healthier-looking turf. They are equipped with several sensors, including an automatic and immediate shutdown of the cutting function if the unit tips over or is lifted from the ground. Additionally, the mower’s design ensures that the blades are positioned well away from the outer edge of the machine body for increased safety and will stop if a sensor is alarmed.
The Community Services Department has mowers placed at the North Mesa Ball Fields and the Los Alamos County Golf Course Driving Range, and they are intended to help staff perform other high-priority job functions.
“Robotic mowers are transforming the sports field industry by delivering consistent, high-quality cuts while reducing labor costs. Their precision and programmability ensure optimal turf health and playability, making them a valuable asset for Parks teams.” stated Parks Superintendent, Wendy Parker.
These mowers can be seen on a daily basis, and CSD asks that if you see one in action, please do not disturb the device.
