PLACES & SPACES NEWS RELEASE
The community is invited to attend a free drop-in junk journaling workshop at the SALA Los Alamos Event Center on Saturday, August 30, 2025 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
What is “Junk Journaling?”
Join us to learn how to make books from scratch using creative and unique materials. Facilitators Liz Martineau and Gordon McDonough, among their many other activities, make books from scratch and will be on hand to get you started experimenting with bookmaking concepts, techniques, and materials. The workshop is called “junk” journaling because it reuses household items that might have otherwise ended up in a recycle bin or the trash.
Materials will be provided, and we will focus on simple book designs that are achievable in a short amount of time. Attendees are also welcome to bring their own “favorite junk” to use in their creations.
The workshop is intended for all ages; young children must be accompanied by an adult. We expect everyone to participate at their own level. No pressure – only helping hands to help draw out your natural creativity.
Participants have the option to take their completed journal home or, if requested, leave it for a public exhibition that will be held at SALA from September 13-20 in conjunction with the Black Hole Museum event on September 18th..It can be retrieved after the exhibition.
