Local Business Coalition Unveils ‘Storefront Recapture Initiative’ Idea to Strengthen Our Community’s Economy

LALBC NEWS RELEASE

The Los Alamos Local Business Coalition (“Coalition”) invites public review and input on its “Storefront Recapture Initiative” a idea, a proposal aimed at boosting the economic vitality of Los Alamos County by steadily converting storefront office tenancies into viable retail, dining, and treat tenancies. This initiative is one of six forward-thinking ideas detailed in the newly released “Coalition Idea Book,” now available as a PDF on the Coalition website

The “Storefront Recapture Initiative” seeks to foster a stronger local economy by:

  • Bolstering the sustainability and growth of Los Alamos County’s business and non-profit sectors by converting storefront office tenancies into active retail, dining, and treat tenancies that will improve continuity of commercial activity and support improved vibrancy on Central Avenue. It will also improve the shopping experience for residents and visitors, address community concerns, and fulfill adopted community plans.
  • Increasing Local Business Survivability: By creating a higher-functioning shopping street, the initiative is designed to increase the retention and survivability of existing businesses, which will produce improved economic results for the community.

“We believe that by strategically converting underutilized storefronts into vibrant retail and dining spaces on Central Avenue, we can create a powerful ripple effect that strengthens our entire economic fabric,” said a spokesperson for the Coalition. “This initiative is about building a more resilient and sustainable local economy for everyone”.

The “Storefront Recapture Initiative” idea, along with other innovative concepts like the “Local Business Billboard Collective” and “Local Procurement Initiative,” were generated through extensive community engagement and forums held since February 2025. These ideas are designed to address the top challenges facing the Los Alamos business environment, including affordable commercial space, complex and opaque regulatory environments, workforce shortages and housing costs, and the perceived lack of support and access to funding for local businesses.

The Coalition encourages all citizens, business owners, and community stakeholders to review the complete set of ideas presented in the “Coalition Idea Book” on our website. Your feedback and engagement on the ideas are invited as we work together to build a more prosperous Los Alamos.
