18th Annual ScienceFest Begins June 20 In Los Alamos

LOS ALAMOS MAINSTREET NEWS RELEASE

Get ready for an exciting week of science in Los Alamos as Los Alamos MainStreet and Creative District brings the 18th annual ScienceFest to the community and region from Friday, June 20 to Saturday, June 28, 2025.

“This year’s theme, ‘Catalysts & Currents,’ is about recognizing both the ground-breaking moments in the scientific world as well as the slow-moving currents of change happening all around us on a daily basis,” Alison Watkins, Event Manager at Los Alamos MainStreet and Creative District, said.

ScienceFest kicks off on the evening of June 20 with the weekly Summer Concert Series at Ashley Pond Park and the return of the highly successful “Night Market.” Headlining the Friday Night Concert is Generation Idol: A Billy Idol Tribute Band. The returning Night Market is designed as a small-scale street market where vendors will be selling modestly priced goods as well as food and beverage items. Take a break from the concert and stroll over to the Night Market to peruse the booths and grab a delicious snack.

The ever-popular “Discovery Day” will be held from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. on June 21, 2025, at Ashley Pond Park and Fuller Lodge and Lawn. As visitors have become accustomed to in years past, Discovery Day will offer quality, hands-on STEM demonstrations by local and regional museums, businesses and organizations, and is particularly geared to families. Don’t miss building and racing solar cars, viewing the Electric Vehicle Show, examining plants and insects under a microscope and more! Food vendors will be on-site for a midday bite to eat.

On Tuesday, June 24, the weekly “Tuesdays @The Square” concert series will feature STEAM activities, a beer garden and music from Quemazon Combo of the Santa Fe Youth Symphony Association, a local favorite who will jazz up the lawn at Central Park Square from 6-8 p.m.

On Saturday, June 28, the festival concludes with the third annual “Discovery After Dark: STEAM for Adults” taking place from 4-9 p.m. Play like a kid again by experimenting and learning something new in an inviting atmosphere. Activities will take place at various locations, including many local businesses and community hubs in downtown Los Alamos. Teams and individuals will have the opportunity to win prizes by participating at each location. Be sure not to miss the code-breaking activities at the Bradbury Science Museum, interactive challenges provided by American Chemical Society, Mathamuseum, Samizdat and STEAMLab, the incredible Wonders on Wheels Mobile Museum, or Rootbeer Floats, math games and soap-making at projectY cowork. Close out the evening with the Pajarito Astronomers Club by attending the “Dark Sky Party” at Overlook Park in White Rock from 8-11 p.m., weather permitting.

There are multiple partner events throughout the week of June 20-28, including a Science of Tea tea-tasting event (6/22), PEEC’s Family Evening with LANL Robot Dogs (6/25), and the Los Alamos County Airport Open House (6/28).
