‘First We Bombed New Mexico’ Shown In Espanola By Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium

The film is a documentary, directed by Emmy Award-winner Lois Lipman, which sheds light on the untold story of the Trinity nuclear test and its devastating impact on the lives of thousands of New Mexicans, primarily in Hispanic and Native American communities. It was shown in Los Alamos at the SALA Event Center last year. Los Alamos Reporter Maire O’Neill, center, and Tina Cordova, co-founder of the Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium, speak with Bernice Gutierrez, a member of the Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium steering committee. She was born in Carrizozo, and was 8 days old when the Trinity test bomb was detonated 35 miles away. Some 25 of her relatives have been diagnosed with cancer, several of them with multiple bouts.
