LOS ALAMOS CO-OP MARKET NEWS RELEASE
One year ago, the Los Alamos Cooperative Market faced the threat of closure, sparking an outpouring of support from the community, for which the Co-op is deeply grateful. In a retail world dominated by big-box stores and impersonal experiences, the Co-op is a vital part of Los Alamos, offering a wide range of locally-sourced, organic, and sustainable products.
While the store remains open today, it continues to face financial challenges. Despite a surge in shopping last spring, traffic has since slowed, and the store is still operating at a loss. To help sustain the Co-op, its staff and board urge community members to stay engaged and continue supporting the store—beginning with the Co-op’s 14th birthday celebration March 29 (details here).
If you haven’t yet experienced the value of shopping here, now is the perfect time to start supporting a business that prioritizes people over profits and works tirelessly to strengthen the local economy and environment. If you’re unsure whether to make the short trip (just 2 miles east of Smith’s).
Here are a few great reasons to shop at the Co-op:
Locally sourced and sustainable
One of the key reasons to shop at the Co-op is its commitment to sustainability and supporting local farmers, artisans, and producers. When you purchase products from the Co-op, you’re not just getting high-quality, organic goods—you’re also investing in your community. The Co-op partners with local farms and suppliers to bring fresh produce, meats, dairy, and artisanal goods directly to your table. By choosing the Co-op, you’re helping strengthen the local economy and fostering a sustainable, eco-friendly food system.
A personal touch
Unlike larger chain grocery stores, the Co-op offers a personal touch that reflects the values of the community. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and always ready to help you find exactly what you’re looking for. Whether you need advice on the best ingredients for a recipe, are looking for dietary-specific products, or just want to chat about the latest community events, the Co-op provides a welcoming atmosphere for everyone. The cooperative structure means that the Co-op is owned by its members, which ensures decisions are made with the community’s best interests in mind.
Health and wellness
The Co-op also prioritizes the health and well-being of its customers. Whether you’re seeking gluten-free, vegan, or non-GMO products, the Co-op has a wide selection to meet diverse dietary needs. With a focus on fresh, whole foods, you’ll find options that promote a healthy lifestyle, all while supporting a business that aligns with your values.
A community hub
The Co-op is more than just a grocery store—it’s a true hub of community activity. It frequently hosts events and local gatherings, making it a place where people can connect and grow together. Your support not only ensures that this local treasure remains viable but helps it thrive for future generations.
When you choose to shop at the Co-op, you’re making a positive impact on the community, the environment, and your own health. It’s more than just shopping—it’s an investment in a better, more sustainable future. Let’s keep it local!
More to come
