The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) is seeking dedicated volunteers to support its mission of enriching lives by strengthening people’s connection to nature. Volunteers are the backbone of PEEC, ensuring visitors have an engaging, educational, and enjoyable experience at Los Alamos Nature Center.
Right now, our greatest need is for docents and garden volunteers!
Docents serve as the ambassadors of PEEC, welcoming visitors, answering questions, and providing guidance on exhibits. This is a fun and interactive role that allows volunteers to engage with the community and share their enthusiasm for nature. Garden volunteers play a crucial role in maintaining our beautiful native plant gardens, ensuring a welcoming and educational outdoor space for all. If you have a green thumb or simply enjoy spending time outdoors, we need your help!
With a wide range of additional opportunities available, there’s something for everyone! From nature walk guides to critter care and social media management, PEEC offers fulfilling ways for individuals to contribute to the community while learning and having fun.
Other volunteer roles include:
● Education Support: Assist with children’s nature programs, school field trips,
and outdoor playtime activities.
● Critter Care: Help look after salamanders, frogs, snakes, and other small
animals.
● Nature Walk Guides: Lead hikes and educate participants about local flora and
fauna.
● Exhibit Support: Edit content, gather images, and collaborate with experts to
improve educational displays.
● Planetarium Projection: Operate the planetarium for night sky shows and
presentations.
● Community Outreach & Marketing: Support PEEC’s engagement efforts
through social media, events, and fundraising initiatives.
PEEC welcomes volunteers of all backgrounds and skill levels. Whether you prefer hands-on work with animals and plants or behind-the-scenes support in marketing and data entry, there’s a place for you to make a meaningful impact.

PEEC was founded in 2000 to serve the community of Los Alamos. It offers people of all ages a way to enrich their lives by strengthening their connections to our canyons, mesas, mountains, and skies. PEEC operates the Los Alamos Nature Center at 2600 Canyon Road, holds regular programs and events, and hosts several interest groups, from birding to hiking to butterfly watching. PEEC activities are open to everyone; however, members receive exclusive benefits such as discounts on programs and gift shop merchandise. Annual memberships start at $35.
