George Glass passed away February, 22, 2025. He was born in Vienna, Austria June 15, 1936. He immigrated to the New York in 1939. His formative years were spent at the Hebrew National Boys School in Yonkers, New York. George was born a physicist. His gift for math and science was apparent from a very young age. Naturally curious, he loved taking things apart just to see if he could put them back together. His talent was recognized by Mr. Koftoff, who sponsored his education. George went on to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on scholarship, earning his bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. in physics in 1964.
While in Boston, George met the love of his life, Patricia, at a square dance mixer. They married in October 1964 and began a life of adventure and partnership. After brief stays in Seattle and Texas, they settled in Los Alamos in 1973. George spent the majority of his 50-year career at Los Alamos National Laboratory. First, as a guest scientist with Texas A&M conducting research in The Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility (LANSCE), and then as Technical Trainer at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He also taught Physics laboratory classes at UNM-LA. He always followed his moral imperative to not work directly on weapons of mass destruction.
Beyond his brilliant career, George was an avid cyclist. Among his many memorable rides were the Tour de Los Alamos, the Santa Fe Century Tour, the Enchanted Circle Century Tour, and the legendary Col de l’Alpe d’Huez stage of the Tour de France.
George was involved in the community. He served as president of LA Bus in the early days helping it to become Atomic City Transit. George was also deeply involved in the Los Alamos Jewish Center, where he served on the Board of Directors. His wisdom, and dedication touched everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Patricia; his children, Sarah Cutler and her spouse Wayne Cutler, Jessica Esplain and her husband William Esplain, Rebekah Glass, and David Glass; his grandchildren, Jacob Maes and his wife Brianna, Ariana Cutler, Jaxx Esplain, and Max Glass; and his great-grandson, Elliot Maes. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Shaw.
A burial service will be held at Guaje Pines Cemetery in Los Alamos on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., with a meal of consolation at the Los Alamos Jewish Community Center immediately following.
