At the Kiwanis February 10 meeting, Jenny McCumber, Director of the Los Alamos Public Schools Foundation, gave a presentation to the club and outlined their fundraising objectives and programs.
She began with the Foundation’s currently ongoing “Shower with Love” fundraising campaign, which began on Valentines Day. It started as a way to support teachers during the pandemic by raising funds for laptops and other equipment needed for remote learning. It has evolved as a way of giving teachers the wish list items that they would like for their classrooms, which they might otherwise need to supply with their own money.
McCumber talked about the foundation’s new Career Technical Education program. With funding provided by the LA Housing Project and interest from LANL, LAPS Foundation will be working with the school district over the next several years to best provide technical education opportunities to all student grade levels.
The Foundation awards scholarships to high school seniors in the categories of community service, career technology, and future teachers, as well as administers several directed scholarships. They also provide grant money to community schools and professional development training for teachers.
