LAPD NEWS RELEASE
The Los Alamos Police Department is alerting the public to a scam in which individuals are receiving phone calls from someone impersonating a detective from the Los Alamos Police Department.
The caller instructs citizens to contact them regarding an important matter and leaves a number
that is not affiliated with the department. This scam has resurfaced in Los Alamos multiple times
over the past few years. Criminals are utilizing “spoofed” or fake phone numbers and referencing real names of local police officers or other public officials to intimidate victims into providing their credit card or other payment information.
“We want to caution the public never to provide payment information over the phone,” said
Deputy Chief James Rodriguez. “Law Enforcement Agencies would not request this type of
information over the phone. If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately and contact the
Emergency Communications Center (ECC).”
If you have been targeted by this scam, please contact the Emergency Communications Center at 505-662-8222.
