This Sunday, November 24 is the Annual Los Alamos CROP Hunger Walk and Turkey Trot!
Folks who want to run or walk in it are invited to come to the Los Alamos Middle School Cafeteria (North Mesa) at 1:30 p.m., register and sign the waiver, make a monetary (non- food) donation to the cause, grab a new t-shirt while they last, get some instructions, use the facilities, and warm up for the course.
The starting gun goes off at 2:00 p.m. at the far end of the parking lot. From the starting line, participants run or walk down the mesa, past or through the stables, and back up the mesa to the middle school. The course, which will be clearly marked, is 1.7 miles or 2.57 miles in length, depending on whether you take the diversion through the stables or not. Snacks, and a random drawing for a few turkeys and pies will be held in the cafeteria following the event.
If you would rather donate money than walk or run the course, you may go to the walk website to do so: https://events.crophungerwalk.org/cropwalks/event/losalamosnm. While on the webpage, you can find a local participant to support or just give directly to the effort. Or, if you are in the area on Sunday, drop by the cafeteria from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. to leave your check or monetary donation with the volunteers at the registration table.
Proceeds from this event will support international and domestic efforts to relieve hunger and to support disaster relief through Church World Service and partner relief agencies. Information about this much-needed work is on the website mentioned above.
One quarter of the proceeds from this event will remain in Los Alamos, supporting L.A. Cares, our local food pantry, which serves households in need right here in our county. In fact, this year’s event is dedicated to the memory of Jeanne Butler who volunteered on the Hunger Walk and with L.A. Cares for many years.
You are welcome to participate in this fun local event either physically or monetarily. Let
us, as this year’s t-shirt says, help “take steps to create enough for all”!
