I am excited about the future of UNM-LA. The college, which has been in the community in one form or another since the 1940s, is at a pivotal moment. Already an excellent option for high school graduates and returning students who are looking for a solid post-secondary educational experience, UNM-LA is poised to undertake substantial upgrades to infrastructure which will make it an even more attractive academic presence in our community.
UNM-LA is a perfect fit for our community. Whether students are looking for a way to enter the workforce as soon as possible or want to earn transferable credits at an affordable price close to home, they find that the local community college is exactly what they need. UNM-LA is the school of choice for these students and a valuable contributor to quality of life in Los Alamos and beyond.
Everyone knows the challenges that accompany aging facilities—at some point, maintenance is unsustainable. Buildings continue to need work, costs continue to rise. Funds that could be used more effectively in other ways must be devoted to constant fix and repair.
Beyond this obvious need, however, is the pressing concern that relates to creating a campus environment that truly enhances the learning experience while serving as a source of pride for both students and the community at large.
This is why we need to support the upcoming UNM-LA bond questions. UNM-LA is a community treasure—it serves local students as well as many from our surrounding area. The school is known for academic excellence, great student services, and engaged administrators and staff. It is a natural for Los Alamos, a community that values education and understands the need for a local college.
A little-known fact is that UNM-LA receives no direct funding from the Albuquerque (“Main”) campus. It receives limited funds from state resources. The primary way a local college is able to do all it does is through the support of the community. Local funding, which demonstrates support for the school and its mission, opens the door to increased state funding. Passing this $3 million Bond will procure an additional $9 million from the State.
Imagine a campus that reflects a forward-looking posture, amplifying the positive experience of everyone, including students, families, local organizations, and faculty and staff. The slight mil levy increase, which will enable the school to leverage state funds, is a small price to pay for improving something that we know adds value to our city and northern New Mexico.
I fully support passing the UNM-LA Bond questions this November and encourage you to vote “Yes”.
