Los Alamos STEAM Lab Announces Classes, Activities And More

Los Alamos STEAM Lab

At STEAM Lab we believe in a lot of autonomy for our kiddos. We have Lego, magnatiles, trains, board games, books, marble runs, and more that are essentially always available for playing with no matter what else we’re doing.

Because of this and a few other factors we also tend to be home to a lot of neuro-spicy kiddos (ADHD, ASD, PDA, etc.). That means that even our typical kids really roll with kiddos who have some specific needs or who have the occasional meltdown. We think it’s good for them, too, as they learn that they can also have big feelings after a long day at school.

After School
This Fall we’ll have after school care from 3-6 every day. Each day of the week has a theme to it to keep things interesting. All of the themes are adaptable for both beginners and experts and kiddos can come just one day a week. We’re also taking a limited number of 4yos who have older siblings attending.

Mondays: Digital Art

Tuesdays: Circuits

Wednesdays: Trains (or swap with Art Center)

Thursday: Minecraft and Mario Kart

Friday: Coding and Robots

Block Printing Class
This four week class will teach kiddos about block printing.  Kiddos will sketch out their art, transfer it to a printing medium, and then use a printing press to make prints of their artwork on greeting cards.

Older kids will use E-Z Cut Lino Blocks and carving tools to create their projects while younger kiddos will use foam, scissors, and a cardboard back to create theirs.

Pre-K
We’re starting some PreK drop-off classes on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 – 11 (or 12).  This program will be a mix of structured activities (including monthly robots!) and free play.

Homeschool
We’ll be offering classes in Mathematical Problem Solving on Wednesday mornings as well as math drop-in hours on Thursdays where students can bring their own curriculum and get support.

There will also be drop-in or drop-off hours on Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

Parenting in a Neurospicy Household
We’re launching a discussion series for parents.  These monthly talks will be a combination of presentation and group discussion addressing the unique needs of households with neurodiverse parents or children with special focus on ADHD, ASD, and anxiety. They don’t purport to provide complete solutions, so much as a variety of recipes that can be tweaked, adapted, and combined to serve the unique needs of individual families.

Our first talk will be on Aug. 26 at 6 p.m.  It is being held in The Zone at Mesa Public Library and the topic will be on the science of schedules.  The speaker will be Jamie Thorsden Monroy for Los Alamos Family Council.  Free childcare and dinner will be provided by Los Alamos JJAB.
