Logan Anthony Bishop, 22, of Los Alamos had been charged in Los Alamos Magistrate Court with reckless driving in connection with an August 2 incident that involved Bishop driving a motorcycle on Trinity Drive at speeds of up to 85 mph.
Court records reflect that Los Alamos Police Cpl. Kirk Williamson on August 2 at about 1:53 p.m. was dispatched to a report of a reckless driver heading west on Trinity Drive in Los Alamos. The caller described the vehicle as a green street bike driving faster than 80 mph. Williamson was also driving westbound on Trinity Drive and observed a green motorcycle driving eastbound in front of the Los Alamos Medical Center. He checked his radar and found that the motorcycle was travelling at 61 mph in a 35 mph zone.
As he approached, the driver looked at his police vehicle and “abruptly accelerated past me at about 85 mph”, Williamson said. Williamson made a U-turn with the intention of making a traffic stop, however by the time he got to Trinity Drive and Timber Ridge Road Williamson had lost sight of the motorcycle.
At that point Williamson observed LAPD Cmdr. Preston Ballew’s vehicle leaving the LAPD parking lot with his emergency equipment activated in traffic traveling eastbound. Ballew then stated on the radio that the motorcycle had crashed in the area of Trinity Drive and 20th Street.
Williamson said he approached the driver, later identified as Logan Anthony Bishop, 22, of Los Alamos, and told him to remain still. Cmdr. Ballew knew Bishop and spoke to him, trying to calm him down, Williamson said. Los Alamos Fire Department medics arrived on the scene and Bishop was transported to Los Alamos Medical Center.
Witnesses indicated to police that Bishop’ motorcycle had left the roadway on the east side of the entrance to 2101 Trinity Drive. Witnesses also indicated that Bishop was traveling eastbound and struck the curb, which launched the motorcycle and Bishop into the air.
Williamson said he recommended that a search warrant be obtained for a blood draw on Bishop. Deputy Chief James Rodriguez said Monday morning that Det. Sgt. Ryan Wolking is currently working on a search warrant for the blood, but that until LAPD receives the results, it will not be known what may or may not have been in Bishop’s system at the time of the crash.
Bishop is slated for arraignment before Magistrate Judge Catherine Taylor on Aug. 28.
