Kiwanis Hears Presentation from LAPS Athletic Director

At their July 9 meeting, the Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos was treated to a presentation by Guy Meyer, the Athletic Director for the Los Alamos Public Schools. Guy is a local from Santa Fe. He
graduated from St. Michaels High School and obtained a communications degree from Fort
Lewis College. He went on to receive a Masters degree in Sports Administration from New
Mexico Highlands University.

Before coming to Los Alamos last year, he worked at Cochise College, NMSU, UNM, and Fort
Lewis College. With more than 19 years in athletic based education, he now runs a program with a full-time staff, 40 plus hourly event workers, and hundreds of volunteers.

In the last year, 475 LAHS athletes participated in New Mexico Athletic Association (NMAA)
sports, won 36 state championships in individual events, and dominated track and field events in the state.

Meyer said that he wants all students to feel safe, included, and excited to play. He emphasized
the positive impact of peer relationships provided by a team setting and believes that it is a
privilege to be a Hilltopper. He offered suggestions to the community on how to help support the program: attend games and events, help with fundraisers, promote community positivity, donate, and (addressed specifically to his audience) convince Kiwanian Morrie Pongratz to continue as the athletic public address announcer.
