LAPS: Recent Arrests In Los Alamos

BY JENNIFER GUY
Superintendent
Los Alamos Public Schools

I was sad to learn of several arrests made this morning, June 18, that involved minors and drug trafficking. I appreciate the police departments efforts to keep our students and community safe. We will continue to cooperate with the police department in any way we can to keep drugs out of our community. This is life threatening and critical to student safety. We have a no tolerance policy for any drug use and want to work with the community to do everything we can to keep students safe. To address this crisis, we must all work together.

Fentanyl and illegal drug use continues to be a danger for our community and our state. It is crucial for us to come together and address the drug use in our town. Fentanyl is a potent substance that has been responsible for overdoses and fatalities and poses a significant threat to individuals of all ages. A very small amount of fentanyl can kill. As educators, parents, and community members we have a responsibility to equip our students with the knowledge and resources they need to make informed decisions and protect themselves from the risks associated with fentanyl.

LAPS remains committed to raising awareness about the risks associated with Fentanyl and other illegal drugs. Teaching our students the skills that they need to keep themselves and friends and family members safe. You can find more information and resources about fentanyl here.  Our goal is to empower our students with the necessary tools to recognize the dangers, identify warning signs, make safe choices, and seek help when needed.

School is out for the summer and this can be an especially risky time for teenagers. We strongly encourage you, as parents and guardians, to actively participate in conversations about drug awareness. Having open and honest conversations about the dangers of fentanyl and substance abuse can have a profound impact on our children’s decision-making skills and overall well being. Together, we can create a strong support network that helps keep our children safe. Here is a site with some resources for talking to students.

You can report any concerns anonymously or speak with a counselor 24 hours a day through our See Something Reporting app here. You can also call the school for more resources through the summer at 505-663-2222.

Anyone with information that can be linked to drug use or any criminal activity should call the LAPD Investigation Unit at 505-662-8222 or Crime Stoppers at 505-662-8282. Callers may remain anonymous.

I hope you all have a safe, happy summer. Please reach out if there is anything that the school can do to support your family.
