J. Oppenheimer Memorial Committee Announces 2024 Scholarship Awards And June 24 Oppenheimer Memorial Lecture

The J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee (JROMC) is pleased to announce the 17 winners of this year’s scholarship awards for Los Alamos and regional high school seniors.

Los Alamos High School

Rebecca Li: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Scholarship, funded by donors
to the JROMC, is awarded to one student for outstanding promise in science and
mathematics.

Shiv Antar Khalsa: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Nancy
Laubach Freed and J. Arthur Freed, funded privately, is awarded to one student
for outstanding academic achievements.

John Cawkwell: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Nicholas C.
Metropolis, funded privately, is awarded to one student who demonstrates
outstanding promise in the mathematical sciences.

Deeanna Foster: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Richard C.
Swenson, funded privately, is awarded to one student with outstanding academic
achievements and who demonstrates exceptional promise in physics or
mathematical sciences.

Emma Frost: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship, funded by the Class of 1970,
is awarded for excellence in the arts or sciences.

Daniel Kim: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Rosalie Heller, funded privately, is awarded to one student with an exceptional academic record who has demonstrated a significant interest in classical music.

Chloe Li: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship, funded by the New Mexico Consortium, is awarded to a student who shows exceptional promise of future contributions to society and plans to attend a New Mexico school of higher education.

Maximus Posada: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship, funded by donors to the JROMC, is awarded for outstanding academic achievements.

Capital High School

Ayanna Martinez: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship, funded by donors to the JROMC, is awarded to a student with a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in basic or applied physical sciences, life sciences, mathematics or computer science and exceptional promise for future contributions to society.

Española Valley High School

Anelia Holterman: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Regional Scholarship in honor of Mary Lou and Michael Williams, funded privately, is awarded to a student who demonstrates excellence in math and science and displays exceptional promise making a positive difference in the world.

Pojoaque Valley High School

Joaquin Caraveo: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Nicholas C. Metropolis, funded privately, is awarded to a student who demonstrates outstanding promise in mathematics, physics, chemistry, or biology.

Dalian Lopez: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship, funded by donors to the JROMC, is awarded to a student with a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in basic or applied physical sciences, life sciences, mathematics or computer science and exceptional promise for future contributions to society.

Matteo Nagle: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship, funded by donors to the JROMC, is awarded to a student with a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in basic or applied physical sciences, life sciences, mathematics or computer science and exceptional promise for future contributions to society.

Araya Vigil: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Satch Cowan, funded by the Delle Foundation, is awarded for an excellent academic record andfor outstanding promise in science or medicine.

Santa Fe High School

Natalia Marquez: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship, funded by the New Mexico Consortium, is awarded to a student who shows exceptional promise of future contributions to society and plans to attend a New Mexico school of higher education.

Merrick Word-Brown: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship, funded by donors to the JROMC, is awarded to a student with a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in basic or applied physical sciences, life sciences, mathematicsor computer science and exceptional promise for future contributions to society.

Aliana Cornflower Ortiz: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Scholarship in memory of Houston T. (Terry) Hawkins, funded privately, is awarded for demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in basic or applied physical sciences, life sciences, mathematics or computer science and exceptional promise of futurecontributions to society.

The J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of Robert Oppenheimer, the first director of Los Alamos National Laboratory and one of the most influential scientists of the 20th century.

The first JROMC scholarship was awarded in 1984 to a graduating senior from Los
Alamos High School (LAHS) in memory of J. Robert Oppenheimer. The scope of this program has grown over the years to multiple scholarships awarded at LAHS and several regional high schools. This year JROMC awarded 17 scholarships totaling $53,000, bringing the grand total to $806,000.

Scholarships are granted to graduating high school seniors based on merit andrecognize a variety of achievements. The committee’s scholarship program is supported by several limited-term endowments, corporate and charitable partners, and numerous individual donations.
In addition to its annual scholarship program, the JROMC sponsors the Oppenheimer Memorial Lecture. This year the free lecture will be “Ancient DNA and the Peopling of the Americas” by Dr. Jennifer Raff, Professor of Anthropology and Affiliate Faculty with the Indigenous Studies Program at the University of Kansas. It will be held Monday, June 24, 7:00 pm at Duane Smith Auditorium.
