LAPS: Updates And Reminders

BY JENNIFER GUY
Superintendent
Los Alamos Public Schools.

Good afternoon! The end of the year is rapidly approaching. Thank you for making it a successful, productive year for our students. The last day of school is Friday, June 7, 2024. Thursday, June 6 and Friday, June 7 will be half days for all students. The elementary schools will dismiss at 12:00, LAMS will dismiss at 11:30, and LAHS will dismiss at 1:00.  LAHS Graduation is this Saturday, May 25, 2024 at 9:00 at Sullivan Field. Congratulations to the class of 2024 and their families!

We have had several questions regarding the school calendar and the injunction from the court about the rule change. You can read about the injunction here.  This injunction does not change the currently approved LAPS Calendar for the upcoming school year. The requirement for 1140 instructional hours each school year is not lifted. We tried to incorporate as much feedback as we could and still be in compliance with the law to meet the time requirements. The first full day of school for students will be on Wednesday, August 7, 2024.  Monday, August 5th and Tuesday, August 6th will be planned to meet the teachers, pick up materials, attend orientations, and other building-specific activities as we did this year. You will get more specific information about times for the activities on these two days from each school this summer. The last day of school next year will be on May 30, 2025. This is in response to the clear feedback we received from parents, staff, and the community that most preferred to end school in May instead of June. We are confident that the approved calendar is an improvement over this year’s calendar, allows us some flexibility for half days as needed, and balances the academic year.

The state officially released data from the 22-23 school year for all of the districts across the state this week. You can review data from all schools here. The school district has been using this data to guide instructional decisions this year. I am proud that LAPS remains a top performer and continues to see growth in data across the district in academics, graduation rates, attendance and other areas. We will spend time with school leaders and teachers this summer looking at all of our data and identifying ways that we can meet the needs for 100% of our students.

Please don’t forget to register your students for next year if you have not done that yet. You can register here. We are not able to issue a schedule or assign students to a teacher for the 24-25 school year until they are registered. If you need any help, you can contact Rosa Schmitz at r.schmitz@laschools.net

Have a wonderful last two weeks of school!
