The Los Alamos Police Department (LAPD) is addressing a public health concern after several hypodermic needles were found Monday at the North Mesa baseball fields and dugouts. The discovery was reported by the president of the Los Alamos Little League to county staff, prompting an immediate response by local authorities.

Late Tuesday afternoon, LAPD officers collected and safely disposed of the used drug paraphernalia and sharps. During a surveillance operation today, officers placed a trailer at the site and discovered an unoccupied homeless encampment and additional drug paraphernalia.

Deputy Police Chief Oliver Morris urges the community to be cautious.

“We ask that parents, coaches, and the public be vigilant and inspect and sweep sporting facilities, as well as other public areas like parks, prior to practice and games. Please call our non-emergency Consolidated Dispatch Center at (505) 662-8222 for proper and safe disposal of drug paraphernalia or sharps,” he said.

LAPD is investigating the incident and is collaborating with the Los Alamos Public Schools to
enhance safety measures to address the issue. Authorities advise that any persons camping on school property be reported immediately to the LAPD. Parents of Los Alamos Middle School students who use the trails to walk home, are asked to instruct their children to use sidewalks along the trafficked streets and to never pick up abandoned trash.
