This Earth Day, Give Your Support To Los Alamos Youth Climate Advocates

BY SARA ANN MASON

I know I’m not the only Los Alamosan who is troubled about what the short- and long-term future holds as we head into another increasingly long wildfire season. A fall 2023 survey found roughly 7 out of every 10 New Mexicans recognize that climate change is happening and is harming plants, animals, and future generations.

The good news is that there are actions we can all take to create the livable future we want for us and our future generations:

● There are local initiatives focused on reducing Los Alamos’ contribution to carbon pollution that we can participate in.

● There are exciting federal policies that will make a meaningful national impact to reduce carbon pollution, and easy ways to let your member of Congress know that you support them.

● There are young people in Los Alamos engaged in bold climate advocacy, and we all have the chance to support them.

Hopefully you’ve already seen the local news coverage about the Los Alamos High School Eco Club’s year-long effort to pass a resolution to electrify our public school system to save money, protect students’ health, and demonstrate the kind of climate leadership that a community like Los Alamos should be known for.

But advocating for our community’s future at the local level isn’t enough for these young people .They are now planning to join hundreds of Citizens’ Climate Lobby volunteers in Washington D.C. this June to advocate for our community’s future at the national level, and you can make a donation to help them get there. This Earth Day, make a donation to invest in these students’ future development as the climate leaders we need to solve humanity’s greatest challenge.
