Los Alamos County To Offer Swim Lessons At Aquatic Center Beginning In April

Los Alamos County Recreation Division has announced that beginning in April 2024, Los Alamos County Aquatic Center staff will be offering swim lessons, in addition to contract instructors, 505 Swimming and Anna Zhang.

The mission of the Los Alamos County Swim Lessons is to promote independence and confidence for every student. Learning to swim is an essential skill that all children should eventually learn. This program is  designed to be taken progressively. Each level is a stepping stone to the next level. When a child  achieves a certain level of comfort in the water, it will increase their overall self-esteem and confidence.  

The below swim lessons are offered in a group format consisting of 6 lessons, held Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday schedules, for a cost of $120 per student. Registration is open for April and May, through the Los Alamos County Aquatic Center webpage! 

Level – 1 Parent & Tot Lessons: 

This class centers around safe water interactions between parents or guardians and their children. This class is designed for children between 6 months and 3 years. A parent is expected to be in the water with their child.

Class content includes the following: 

  • Getting Wet 
  • Submerging Gradually (Month, Nose, Face, and Head) 
  • Safely Enter/Exit the Water
  • Underwater Exploration 
  • Safe Parent Holds (how to hold your child in the water properly) 
  • Floating, Gliding, and Rolling 
  • Passing (Parent to Instructor)
  • Motor Skills (Leg and Arm Movement)
  • Comfort with the Water
  • Water Safety Skills
  • Surface Water Exploration

Monday/Wednesday Class schedule:  

  • 5:30 – 6 p.m. April 8, 10, 15, 17, 22, and 24 
  • 5:30 – 6 p.m.  May 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, and 22 

Tuesday/Thursday Class schedule: 

  • 9:30 – 10 a.m. April 9, 22, 26, 18, 23, and 25
  • 10 – 10:30 a.m. April 9, 22, 26, 18, 23, and 25  

Level – 2 Seahorse Lessons: 

This class focuses on becoming comfortable in the water. This class is designed for children 3 years and up. Basic motor skills for swimming are introduced.

Class content includes the following: 

  • Safely Enter / Exit the Water
  • Floating, Gliding, and Rolling
  • Getting Comfortable in Water
  • Motor Skills (Leg and Arm Movement) 
  • Surface Water Exploration • Combined Motor Skills 
  • Submerging Gradually (Mouth, Nose, Face, and Head) 
  • Underwater Exploration (Goggles Recommended) 
  • Treading Water (Motor Skills Only) 
  • Water Safety Skills 

Monday/Wednesday Class schedule:  

  • 4:30-5 p.m. April 8, 10, 15, 17, 22, and 24 
  • 5-5:30 p.m. April 8, 10, 15, 17, 22, and 24 
  • 6-6:30 p.m. April 8, 10, 15, 17, 22, and 24 
  • 4:30-5 p.m. May 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, and 22
  • 5-5:30 p.m. May 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, and 22
  • 6-6:30 p.m. May 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, and 22

The Aquatic Center is excited to be able to offer swim lessons again and hopes to see the smiling faces of children eager to learn how to swim and explore in water!
