LAMS NEWS RELEASE
The Los Alamos Middle School will be celebrating Pi Day (3/14) this year with a little help from Pirates of the Caribbean and a lot of help from the community.
Pi Day (3/14) is a highlight on the middle school calendar. Traditionally, the LAMS PTO with the middle school staff hosts a daylong event for students surrounding the concept of π. The goal of Pi Day is to promote math literacy and the concept of Pi in a fun, hands-on learning environment.
This year Pi Day has a “Pi”-rates of the Caribbean theme. LAMS PTO and staff will set up 12 stations each named after a Caribbean island. Each station has a novel word problem and activity for kids to solve equations based on π. Students will work their way through 6 different stations, making calculations in a math passport that is handed into the math department on completion of the course.
No math skills required! All materials and instructions will be provided. Please consider joining us for the fun and to support LAMS students while they learn about Pi. This beloved tradition is only possible thanks to many volunteers! We need help setting up, guiding students through math problems, and cleaning up afterwards.
