Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernández (NM-03) visited several groups in Los Alamos February 20. She held a roundtable with Los Alamos National Lab (LANL) officials and small business owners to better facilitate technology transfer, presented a congressional record honoring Los Alamos Public Schools as 2023 Advanced Placement Small District of the Year, met with Los Alamos County Officials, and toured the Family YMCA that she is working to secure funding for.
The Congresswoman met with six LANL employees along with local small business owners to discuss how the Department of Energy and the Lab can do more to spin out technologies into the private sector and support companies that move to New Mexico to utilize LANL facilities and technology.
“From medical advancements to clean energy solutions, LANL develops many of the most ground-breaking technologies the world has ever known. We should look for opportunities to put this technology into the hands of private New Mexico businesses to grow our economy and create good paying jobs,” said Rep. Leger Fernández.
Lab employees and the small business owners discussed their experiences with technology transfer in northern New Mexico and how the federal government, state, and LANL can better collaborate to create and grow more businesses.
The Congresswoman then headed to Los Alamos High School to present the school district with a Congressional record honoring their achievements. The College Board recognized Los Alamos Public Schools as the 2023 Advanced Placement Small District of the Year. Los Alamos Public Schools beat out more than 12,000 school districts across the U.S. and Canada.
She also spoke to an A.P. Government class of juniors and seniors, congratulated them on their hard work, talked about her work in Congress on behalf of New Mexicans, and answered questions.
The New Mexico representative ended her day in Los Alamos with a tour of the Family YMCA. The Congresswoman is working with the Family YMCA to secure $395,000 to refurbish the community facility.
The Congresswoman said that, “Although I requested the funds and the Appropriations Committee approved them, extreme House Republican dysfunction has held up the funds from making it to the Family YMCA.”
Several other New Mexico projects are also waiting for federal funds.
“In fact, the lack of a budget is holding up $21.9 million that I requested for New Mexico communities across my district,” said the Congresswoman.
