CITY OF ESPANOLA NEWS RELEASE
Editor’s note: The City Manager’s Office has indicated that the most needed items at the encampment are sleeping pads and sleeping bags. If you can help, these items can be dropped off at City Hall, 505 N. Paseo de Onate, Espanola. Or check in with the Los Alamos Reporter at maire@losalamosreporter.com
In a recent development, City Manager Eric Luján has revealed plans to establish a temporary designated homeless encampment near Fairview Lane. The location, owned by the City since the 1970s and once used as recreational fields, is currently vacant with no defined purpose. The encampment is set to be disbanded in early April post a comprehensive community outreach effort. Residents previously situated on Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo property will find a new, more suitable environment at this designated area, located away from residential zones.
Collaborating with the Rio Arriba County Health & Human Services Department and the Española Pathways Shelter, the City aims to ensure a respectful and safe utilization of the space. Strict policies will be enforced including city-handled trash collection for property preservation.
This initiative complements Mayor John Ramon Vigil’s plan for a Department of Social Services to enhance community support. Together, these efforts seek to provide a secure and supportive environment for homeless individuals, promoting the optimum utilization of available resources.
Unity, compassion, and understanding are encouraged from all residents of
the Valley as this initiative unfolds.
