KAREN WRAY GALLERY NEWS RELEASE
It’s that time of year again when it’s cold outside, the holidays are over, and the doldrums have arrived! This is your opportunity to take that art class you’ve always talked about. The Karen Wray Gallery provides fun, information-packed art classes for adults right here in beautiful Los Alamos. If you want to really learn how to draw or paint, but don’t know where to start, we’re here for you. If you have never tried art or painting and are afraid to try, we can help!
Classes are starting very soon at the Karen Wray Gallery! Sign up online or visit the gallery in person. Click on the link below, select “ARTISTS,” then “JARED KRUPP” for Drawing Classes or “KAREN WRAY” for Painting Classes. We pushed back the Beginning Drawing Classes one week to start Feb. 8 and two weeks for the Beginning Painting Class to start Feb. 22. Karen had elbow surgery and was a little too optimistic about how fast she would recover.
The Karen Wray Gallery is located at 1247 Central Avenue, Suite D-2 in Los Alamos. We’re open Mon-Fri 11-4 and Sat 10-4.
Beginning Drawing-Jared Krupp, Instructor
Friday mornings, 9:30-12:30
This class introduces students to the fundamentals of drawing. Students will learn how to draw, beginning with the four basic shapes: spheres, cylinders, cubes, and cones, focusing on shading, proportions, negative space, and aerial and linear perspective.
Painting for the Absolute Beginner-Karen E. Wray, Instructor
Thursday mornings, 9:30-12:30
This class is designed for the absolute beginner and is focused on the basic fundamentals of painting. Oil paint is the chosen medium due to its forgiving and slow-drying nature. Students will learn about the materials, paints, safety, brushes, and surfaces or supports, and how to create the illusion of a 3D form on a 2D surface using values (lights and darks) and simple composition. Students will initially paint simple still life arrangements using only black and white paint, then will add a third color to create a monochromatic painting. Instructor will use demonstrations and discussion, in addition to student’s hands-on experience to introduce and practice basic concepts. You will never see everyday things the same way again!
Continuing Drawing-Jared Krupp, Instructor
Wednesday mornings, 9:30-12:30
This class is geared for students who are interested in refining their drawing skills. Prior experience with basic drawing is highly recommended.
Continuing Painting-Karen E. Wray, Instructor
Saturday mornings, 9:30-12:30
This class is for those students who have already taken the Beginning class or are already familiar with the concepts of values, color temperature, basic drawing, basic composition, and atmospheric perspective. Students will learn how to photograph their own subject or arrange a still life, how to prepare a canvas, work with toned or white canvases, make thumbnail and value studies, and paint! Students must use their own, not-published, photographs. Demonstrations and more in-depth discussions, in addition to lots of student practice, will be presented to reinforce and expand on basic fundamentals. Prepare to have fun, get excited about painting, and see the beauty in everything around you!
