Jacci Gruninger, the new executive director of the Los Alamos Retired and Senior Organization was the speaker at the Kiwanis meeting on December 5. She outlined the many activities and services provided by the Betty Ehart Senior Center in Los Alamos and the White Rock Senior Center. Gruninger told Kiwanis that since taking the position over five months ago she has been “blown away by what we do for senior citizens” here.
The centers’ activities, curtailed during the pandemic, are back and doing well. The kitchen in the Betty Ehart Senior Center has been remodeled and upgraded and serves 30 to 50 lunches each day and home-delivers 90 additional meals.
Transportation services are free to community members over 60 and will take them (with at least 24 hours’ notice) to any appointment they have in Los Alamos County. In addition, the driving service will provide transportation to and from Santa Fe and Albuquerque for doctor’s appointments. Sometimes, the center offers free trips to Santa Fe to attend such events as the Santa Fe Opera.
The centers offer a wide range of exercise classes, workout equipment for use, games and entertainment from pool, to billiards, to bridge. Starting in January, they will be offering tax preparation services.
“It’s all there,” Gruninger said, “Come and check it out…There is something for everyone”.
