UNM-LA NEWS RELEASE

In September of last year, UNM-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) opened a redesigned library space to encourage new ways for students to gather in a modern learning environment.

The redesign changed the area from functioning as an archive of material with a traditional transactional design related to “checking out” materials, to a transformed space that is a modern, safe, efficient, and attractive “learning resource center.” The renovations simultaneously provide a more effective space for both campus and community presentations and gatherings.

New furnishings, LED lighting, interior design elements, structural changes, and previous enhancement projects have come together to create a bright, pleasant, open space for students and community members to work and study.

Alongside these transformations, UNM-LA has also updated the library’s holdings. While in the past students might have checked out physical materials like books, CDs, DVDs, etc., increasingly students are relying much more heavily on materials available online. As such, UNM-LA has expanded online access through various databases and streaming platforms and begun the process of culling the physical collection to make space available for other uses to students, staff, and the public. UNM-LA will continue to house an extensive collection related to the American Southwest, including Los Alamos and the Manhattan Project, but will gradually be reducing and streamlining its book collection based on accepted American Library Association standards.

As part of that process, UNM-LA has posted for auction a lot of approximately 9500 books and other materials for which they no longer have a demonstrated need. These are books that are either no longer relevant to its programming or that have not been checked out in a long time. UNM-LA welcomes anyone to bid on the lot at https://www.govdeals.com/asset/986/5083.

UNM-LA hopes you will all feel welcome to visit the Learning Resource Center Library to use the space and remaining materials.
