Valles Caldera And PEEC Present Slideshow, ‘Valles Caldera – 50 Years In Photos’ With Author Don Usner

CALDERA ACTION NEWS RELEASE

Caldera Action and the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) present a slideshow, book-singing and talk about the Valles Caldera by noted author and photographer Don Usner, September 9 at the SALA Events Center in Los Alamos, at 7:30 PM

Usner published “Valles Caldera, a New Vision for New Mexico’s Preserve” with Bill DeBuys in 2021. The book, published by Museum of New Mexico Press, delves into the history and wonder of the Preserve with the eloquence and humor these two noted authors are known for. Don will be signing copies of their book at the event.

Los Alamos and Chimayo native Don Usner has been photographing the Valles Caldera since the 1970s and produced some remarkable photos in the very late or early hours, far in the backcountry of the Valles Caldera National Preserve recently. With a special permit, Usner was able to access the Preserve during closed hours, the time when the wildlife and the light are out to play.

Don is the author of eight books, seven of them about northern New Mexico. He has a deep interest in the Jemez Mountains. His background in geography and natural history gives him insight into the vast Valles Caldera National Preserve which he helped shepherd to public ownership in 2000.

Usner’s slideshow and talk is sponsored by Caldera Action, a nonprofit focused on the Valles Caldera and by the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC).

Tom Ribe, Executive Director of Caldera Action will introduce Don and give a short update on management challenges at the Caldera.
