ASPEN NEWS RELEASE

Aspen Elementary School held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, August 30 to celebrate the arrival of a book vending machine. Aspen students can earn “Tiger Tokens” by demonstrating positive behavior and kindness. Tiger Tokens may then be used to pick a book from the book vending machine, which operates much like a snack vending machine.

Aspen students are very excited about the new way to promote reading. The school wishes to thank two sixth grade students, Kaya Wilson and Ashley McLaughlin, who approached Aspen with the idea. Both girls are Girl Scouts with Troop 10074 and are working towards their Bronze Award project for community service.

The funding for the purchase of the vending machine came from another Girl Scout from Los Alamos, Senior Fortis Brown, who generously donated funds she had earned over many years of selling Girl Scout Cookies. The Aspen PTO supplied the remainder of the funds to purchase the machine and has agreed to provide a yearly budget for books, which will be purchased by Aspen Librarian, Jeff Lloyd.
