Supt. Jennifer Guy Notes Great Start To 2023-2024 School Year

BY JENNIFER GUY
Superintendent
Los Alamos Public Schools

It has been a great start to the school year. Students around the district seem excited to be in school. I hope you have an opportunity to attend your students’ Open Houses. This is a great chance to meet your child’s teacher and other school staff. We will have district staff available to answer questions at each event as well. Back to school time is often the time that we see an increase in student illness. You can help us keep our students healthy.

  • Please remember to keep your child home if they are sick.
  • Call the school’s absence line and report symptoms of illness if they are absent.
  • Remind your child to wash their hands especially before meals and snacks. (teachers will remind them too!)
  • If your child, or anyone in your household, tests positive for covid, please notify the school immediately. If you need a covid test, please contact your school nurse or call 505-663-2222.
  • Make sure that you have updated your school nurse about any new health issues or changes that your child may have had over the summer.
  • If you are concerned about a student’s physical or emotional safety, you can report your concerns to any teacher, principal, or school counselor. You can can also report concerns through our See Something, Say Something tip line. This is monitored 24 hours a day by a trained counselor.
  • Keep your child’s immunizations up to date. You can find a list of required vaccinations here. IMPORTANT: a 2nd meningococcal vaccine is required for all 11th grade high school students this year. For vaccinations, or more information about vaccines or waivers, please contact:
    • Your child’s doctor’s office
    • Smith’s Pharmacy in Los Alamos and White Rock.
    • Los Alamos Health Office (1183 Diamond Dr. Suite D, Los Alamos, NM) Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 8am-5pm by appointment 505-662-4038.
    • Visit the New Mexico Department of Health Website.

We are looking forward to a safe and healthy school year!
