LAPS NEWS RELEASE
Los Alamos High School senior Sonja Ebey has been awarded an Akamai Certificate of Excellence for outstanding achievement in the American Mathematics Competition 12B by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) in their Young Women in Mathematics Awards & Certificates (YWMAC) program.
LAHS math teachers Ethan Honnell and Nikol Strother presented Sonja with her award certificate.
“Sonja is an exemplary student with a rare talent. Her passion for mathematics will undoubtedly lead to great success. I am very proud of Sonja and all of her achievements,” noted Ms. Strother.
The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) recognized Sonja for her outstanding achievement as one of the top-scoring young women in the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC). Every year, more than 300,000 students worldwide take the MAA AMC.
The Young Women in Mathematics Awards & Certificates program started with former MAA AMC student, Meera Desai, wanting to see more students like her in the MAA AMC. This humble vision expanded into a program that now honors hundreds of young women excelling in the MAA AMC, thanks to the generous support of the D.E. Shaw Group, AwesomeMathGirls.org, Two Sigma, Jane Street, and Akamai.
