Rotary Youth Exchange Student Hannes Wiertzema Thanks Local Club, Trades Banners At Tuesday’s Meeting

Youth Exchange student Hannes Wiertzema traded Rotary Club banners with Club President Alison Pannell during the Tuesday’s meeting at Cottonwood on the Greens.  During his stay in Los Alamos, Wiertzema has embraced life at LAHS.  He earned A’s in Honors Physics, attended Homecoming and Prom activities, and participated in high school football, wrestling, and rugby.  He is a member of the LAHS Interact Club, Rotary’s teen service organization.  Wiertzema was also involved in many local and District-level Rotary service and recreational activities, and although he is not fond of fruit, it was raspberry pie that led him to 1st-place victory in a recent pie-eating contest at the District Conference in Roswell.  It’s unlikely he will ever eat raspberries again. Hannes Wiertzema, a Youth Exchange student sponsored by the Rotary Club of Los Alamos, thanks Club members Tuesday at Cottonwood on the Greens for the opportunities he has had during his 2022-2023 studies here.  He is especially grateful to the Metcalf, Sullivan, and Morris families for hosting him in their homes during the school year.  Wiertzema hails from the small farming community of Kirchweyhe, just south of Bremen, in Lower Saxony, Germany and will return home in June. Photo by Linda Hull
