The Los Alamos Concert Association will present Québec’s celebrated chamber orchestra, Les Violons du Roy and brilliantly versatile pianist Inon Barnatan in concert on Friday, April 28 at 7:00 pm in the Duane Smith Auditorium.

The program will include two very different piano concertos:  one by C. P. E. Bach and one by Shostakovich with an extensive trumpet obligato..

A focal point of Québec City’s musical life since it was founded in 1984 by Bernard Labadie, Les Violons du Roy takes its name from the famed court orchestra of the French kings.  Now under the musical direction of Jonathan Cohen, the ensemble explores the nearly boundless repertoire of music for chamber orchestra in performances matched as closely as possible to the period of each work’s composition.

A favorite in concert halls around the globe, the orchestra continues to build on its stellar reputation with dozens of highly acclaimed recordings and regular tours throughout Europe, Asia, and the United Stages.

Inon Barnatan, “One of the most admired pianists of his generation” (New York Times), has received universal acclaim as a multifaceted musician, equally celebrated as soloist, curator, and collaborator.

Barnatan’s extensive discography includes a two-volume set of Beethoven’s complete piano concertos, recorded with Alan Gilbert and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields

He has also released a live recording of Messiaen’s masterpiece Des canyons aux étoiles (From the Canyons to the Stars), in which he played the exceptionally challenging solo piano part at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival.

In addition to the Bach and Shostakovich concertos, the program will include string symphonies numbers 2 and 6 by Mendelssohn, and the Adagio and Fugue in C minor, K. 456 by Mozart.

Tickets ($35) are available electronically at www.losalamosconcert.org. Ticket outlets in Los Alamos include the Fuller Lodge Arts Center and Smith’s in Los Alamos and White Rock. Tickets to all LACA concerts are free for young people ages 6-18.
