Councilor David Reagor: Bear Carts In White Rock?

BY DAVID REAGOR
Los Alamos County Councilor

Much has been made of the bear resistant trash cart issue.  There are some good arguments for protecting our wildlife, but this program should never have included White Rock. I understand that someone once took a picture of a bear prowling around the dumpster behind Smith’s. In the rest of White Rock we don’t have a history of problems. I frequently hike around White Rock and have found many interesting tracks in the arroyos, but never a bear track. The last time we reviewed the records we had zero reports of bears overturning roll carts in White Rock. This may change in the future, but right now it is a poor use of funds to buy bear resistant carts for the whole county. I will oppose any measure that includes White Rock.
