LAFD And LAPD Gearing Up For Broomball Battle Of The Badges To Benefit Special Olympics Feb. 25

LAPD NEWS RELEASE

This year our communities finest will suit up to play a charity event to benefit our local Special Olympic Athletes at the Los Alamos ice-rink.  On Saturday Feb. 25 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Los Alamos Police Officers will battle the Los Alamos Firefighters in a game of Broomball! What is Broomball? Broomball is like ice hockey but without skates, what could go wrong?

The event will raise money through selling concessions, selling merchandise, taking donations, having a half-time raffle, and a silent auction. All proceeds will go to benefit Special Olympic Athletes.  Volunteers will be taking cash, cards, and checks may be made out to “Special Olympics New Mexico” or “SONM”.

There will be commemorative pub glasses for purchase and coupons for pints at Bathtub Brewery. Some of the auction items include; a helicopter flight for 3 from Classic Air, a 30-minute airplane ride, Black Rifle Coffee Company merchandise and coffee, a lawn sculpture from Metzger’s Do It Best, and more.

Leadership Los Alamos Class of 2023 participants Ty Ryburn, Ana Martinez, and Curtis Christensen are helping administer this event as their Community Leadership Project.

Opening Ceremonies will begin at 10:30 am.  Honor Guard, Bagpipers, and Special Olympic Athletes will present the “Flame of Hope” torch to begin the broomball game.  LAPD and LAFD will compete for the coveted traveling trophy and hopefully entertain those of you who wish to support our amazing athletes.

“Los Alamos Police and Fire have long supported Special Olympic New Mexico and our local athletes,  I had the privilege of attending the National Special Olympic Games in Orlando, Florida last year.  Special Olympics provides amazing opportunities for athletes and their families. Please consider attending or donating to this event,” said Deputy Chief Oliver Morris, North Region Coordinator for SONM.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
