The DOE.NNSA will hold a public meeting from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. this evening, Thursday at Fuller Lodge to discuss the Environmental Impact Statement for the NNSA Surplus Plutonium Disposition Program Environmental Impact Statement.
The first 30 minutes of the meeting will be a poster session with NNSA personnel available to answer questions. The posters are available to view online at

Oral comments by the public are limited to three minutes.
The SPDP project involves the dispositioning of 34 metric tons of surplus plutonium using multiple sites including Los Alamos National Laboratory. The draft EIS analyzes the NNSA’s proposal to dilute and dispose of the surplus plutonium by diluting it with processing it to plutonium oxide through a process that includes processing it to plutonium oxide, diluting it with an adulterant to inhibit plutonium recovery, and disposing the resulting contact-handled transuranic waste at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad.
In addition to LANL, the project would require capabilities Savannah River Site in South Carolina, Pantex in Texas, WIPP and the Y-12 National Security Complex in Tennessee.
