Emanuel Ax, a preeminent pianist of our time, will perform in Los Alamos on Sunday, Jan. 22 at 4:00 p.m.
Ax last performed in Los Alamos in 1976 after winning the first Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv. Since then, he has performed with virtually every major orchestra worldwide. As a soloist and chamber musician he has been honored with multiple Grammy awards, most recently in 2022 for Hope Amid Tears, an album of Beethoven cello sonatas with regular collaborator Yo Yo Ma.
In Los Alamos, Ax will perform works by contemporaries Franz Schubert and Franz Liszt including early and late sonatas by Schubert plus transcriptions of Schubert songs by Liszt. The program will also include Vallee d’Oberman from Liszt’s Années de pèlerinage, a collection of pieces widely considered the summation of his musical style.
Presented by the Los Alamos Concert Association, the performance will take place in the Duane Smith Auditorium at 1300 Diamond Drive on the campus of Los Alamos High School.
While State of New Mexico guidelines do not mandate masks for this performance, masks will be appreciated by many in the audience and social distancing in the large hall is encouraged.
Tickets ($35) are available electronically at www.losalamosconcert.org. Ticket outlets in Los Alamos include the Fuller Lodge Arts Center and Smith’s in Los Alamos and White Rock. Tickets to all LACA concerts are free for young people ages 6-18.
