The Los Public Schools Board voted Tuesday evening to approve Jennifer Guy as acting superintendent of LAPS “with edits to the contract that the board will communicate to the Human Resources director”. Supt. Jose Delfin is believed to be on extended leave.
The Los Alamos Reporter reached out to Delfin Dec. 9 to ask about rumors of changes in LAPS leadership but did not receive a response. The Board’s vote to enter into a contract with Guy seems to indicate that Delfin’s absence will not be short-term as contracts for acting superintendent are not usually signed by the Board for short-term absences.
There was no other statement or comment by the Board Tuesday evening. Board President Melanee Colgan prefaced the request for a motion by saying, “We’re very excited about the next (motion)”.
The Los Alamos Reporter reached out to Board President Melanie Colgan Thursday morning for a statement. Colgan said Delfin is currently on administrative leave and that the duration of that leave is unknown at this time.
“The Board has appointed Assistant Superintendent Jennifer Guy to serve as Acting Superintendent in Dr. Delfin’s absence. While we cannot disclose details of an employee’s personnel matters, Los Alamos Public Schools is appreciative of our community’s support as we work to create the best possible learning environment for our students,” Colgan said.
The Board voted in January to hire Delfin who was previously an associate superintendent for Carson City School District in Northern Nevada where he supervised human resources, risk management and transportation, as well as principals and support staff.
Guy has been an assistant superintendent at LAPS since March 2021. She began her career teaching for 14 years in Hobbs followed by seven years at Pinon Elementary School in White Rock. She was appointed principal of Mountain Elementary in 2013 and assistant superintendent in 2018. She served as interim superintendent from March 2021 to went back to her assistant superintendent position when Delfin came on board.
