LAPS FOUNDATION NEWS RELEASE
This is week the high school will release its local scholarship packet for graduating seniors. Los Alamos Public Schools Foundation awards many scholarships to graduating seniors each year. The Foundation’s scholarships are based on community service and career technical pathways. Students receiving Foundation scholarships select an Educator of Distinction from their years at Los Alamos Public Schools who is recognized along with the student. The Foundation also administers many additional scholarships on behalf of people within our community. The 2023 scholarships will include: the Irene Boone Memorial Scholarship, the Jim Sims Memorial Engineering Scholarship, the Sophia Feldman Memorial Scholarship, the Larry Baca Memorial Scholarship, the June Ettinger Memorial Scholarship, the Kristin Kosiewicz Substance Abuse Awareness Scholarship, and the Ross and Lola Ramsey Memorial Scholarship.
This will be the second year for the Kristin Kosiewicz Substance Abuse Awareness Scholarship. This year the scholarship will be a $2000 award for one graduating student based on their essay about the negative impacts of substance abuse. This scholarship is in memory of Kristin Kosiewicz, a 1993 graduate of Los Alamos High School, who tragically passed away on September 26, 2021 from an accidental drug overdose. Kristin’s family not only wants to honor her life through the scholarship but also to raise awareness and help young people avoid the dangers of accidental overdose throughout their lives so that no family has to endure the pain of losing a loved one in this way. The Ross and Lola Ramsey Memorial Scholarship is a new scholarship this year honoring the lives of two long time teachers at Los Alamos High School who created the Olions theater program, managed the civic auditorium (now Duane Smith Auditorium) and began Topper Revue, the yearly talent show at LAHS. Friends and former students of the Ramseys have joined together to honor them by naming the stage at Duane Smith Auditorium “The Ross and Lola Ramsey Stage”, raising funds to purchase needed lighting equipment and creating a named annual scholarship to recognize a deserving student who has participated in theater/musical performances during high school and been involved in the Olions program. One $1000 scholarship will be awarded. Click here to learn more about the project honoring the Ramseys or to make a donation to this scholarship.
Scholarship applications are due on Tuesday, February 21, 2023. Seniors who wish to apply can go to https://lapsfoundation.com/apply-for-a-scholarship/ and apply online. If you have questions or need assistance, contact LAPS Foundation at 505-500-6501.
