UNM-LA NEWS RELEASE
UNM-Los Alamos would like to express its gratitude to the many generous donors who have seen the great potential in our students and institution and have turned their support into action by donating.
Thanks to bighearted people and their donations, UNM-LA has been able to open doors to promising futures for hundreds of students through scholarships, and support UNM-LA’s mission of student and faculty success through funding innovative opportunities and modernizing lab equipment to meet safety standards. Donations provide annual support to underwrite the needs of the university pertaining to student and providing resources for Los Alamos community.
As part of the U.S. Department of Education Title V grant received by UNM-Los Alamos (UNM-LA), there is a unique opportunity for donations to the UNM-LA endowment account to be matched dollar for dollar up to $250,000 over five years.
This specific Title V grant program provides funding to assist Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) to expand educational opportunities and improve the academic attainment of Hispanic and other students. Per the guidelines, the program enables HSIs to “expand and enhance the academic offerings, program quality, faculty quality, and institutional stability of colleges and universities that are educating the majority of Hispanic college students and help large numbers of Hispanic students and other low-income individuals complete postsecondary degrees.”
One of the goals identified in the UNM-LA grant is to improve institutional stability, specifically fiscal stability, by increasing the endowment fund. Over the five-year period of the grant, the goal is to increase endowment funds from $500,000 to $1,000,000 by raising approximately $50,000 per year, which the Title V grant will match dollar for dollar up to $250,000 over the term of the grant.
Per the American Council on Education’s report on Understanding College and University Endowments, “an endowment is an aggregation of assets invested by a college or university to support its educational and research mission in perpetuity. It represents a compact between a donor and an institution and links past, current, and future generations. These gifts also allow an institution to make commitments far into the future knowing that resources to meet those commitments will continue to be available.” The report goes on to state that, “Endowments serve institutions and the public by, providing stability, leveraging other sources of revenue, encouraging innovation and flexibility, and allowing a longer time horizon.
UNM-LA Chancellor, Mike Holtzclaw, said, “We are grateful for our supporters, who are a vital part of our UNM-LA community. Your dedication to our mission of student and faculty success helps us to be able to offer an exceptional education and career development for our students and community.”
