On Friday, September 9, Los Alamos NJROTC cadets volunteered to run a combined 22 miles in honor of the 22 military veterans who die from suicide every day. The cadets of Topper Company ran on the 22nd day of school to bring awareness to a crisis that has far surpassed the number of lives claimed by combat. The run, conducted at Sullivan Field, was attended by school officials and students with water and sports drinks graciously donated by the Los Alamos American Legion Post 90.
Eager to give to a good cause and promote an issue typically not spoken of, the cadets hope to expand the run in the future into a fundraiser type of event with all proceeds being donated to charities that help prevent veteran suicide. The cadets of Topper Company would also like everyone to know that if you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available. Call or text the National Suicide and Crisis Hotline at 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org.
