
Road Construction Update: Week of August 22, 2022

Public Works Projects:
The projects listed in this section are being managed by County Public Works staff through contractors. Please note the below information is based on a schedule provided by the contractors and may change due to weather or other delays.
Canyon Road Reconstruction
TLC Plumbing and Utility, under contract with the Los Alamos County Public Works Department has completed Phase 1 of the three-phase project on Central Ave and Canyon Rd. The intersection at Central and Canyon is now open.
Phase 2 of Canyon Road construction includes the section from the Aquatic Center western driveway to 39th St. This work is scheduled through the end of August.
Access to the Aquatic Center and Canyon Village Apartments is being provided from the east via Central. LAPS Staff Parking Lot and IHM Catholic Church will continue to be accessible from the west via Diamond Dr and Canyon through the work zone.
Sidewalk closures are posted with detour signage to keep pedestrians clear of the work zone.
Atomic City Transit and Park & Ride staff have adjusted bus routes accordingly. Services such as mail delivery, trash and recycling collection, and emergency services will be maintained.
Phase 3 begins November 1 and will complete the final pavement surface between the Aquatic Center and the Nature Center. Completion of all three phases of the project is scheduled at the end of November 2022.
Construction hours are Monday through Friday 5:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. To stay on-schedule and avoid weather delays, crews will have an earlier start time. Motorists and pedestrians are asked to use caution around construction activities, avoid entering the work zone and obey all work zone signage. Motorists are asked to utilize Trinity Dr as much as possible as the main thoroughfare between neighborhoods and the downtown area.
The Tennis Courts located on Canyon will remain closed, as the area is being utilized as an equipment staging area for the duration of the project.
Sherwood Blvd and Aztec Ave
Star Paving Company will continue road and drainage improvements on Sherwood Blvd between Piedra Loop and Aztec Ave.
Sherwood will be closed to through traffic prior to the intersection of Aztec to Grand Canyon Dr. Residents on Sherwood will be required to enter and exit Sherwood from Grand Canyon. This closure is necessary to facilitate installation of new storm drainpipe.
Closure of Sherwood from Grand Canyon to Aztec for this first phase of work will now continue through the end of September. An additional closure for the next phase of roadwork from Longview Dr to Aztec has begun, and the third phase from Piedra Loop to Grand Canyon is now scheduled for September 2022.
Traffic devices and detour signs are in place to help motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians navigate around the work zone.
Vehicle access is limited to those who reside in the immediate work area and mail delivery, emergency services, and trash and recycling collection. For safety of the traveling public, residents are asked not to remove or relocate traffic control devices, signs, and barricades. Area residents who may have special access needs are asked to contact the Public Works Department.
Work schedules are subject to change pending weather conditions and any material shipping delays. Work Hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Cumbres del Norte Road Improvements
Star Paving crews will be placing asphalt from the intersection of Camino Redondo and Cumbres Patio to the intersection of Camino Redondo and Camino Redondo. They will continue grading from the intersection of Camino Redondo north to San Ildefonso for placement of asphalt. Please use caution while traveling through the project work zone.
DP Rd Utility Infrastructure Replacement and Roadway Reconstruction
A contractor working for Qualcon Builders will continue construction of the remaining sidewalk sections, replacement of broken curb and gutter, street light installation and grading along the sides of DP Rd. These activities will impact DP Rd from Trinity Dr to Fire Station #2, with segments of the roadway periodically restricted to one-lane traffic controlled by a flagger. One-lane traffic restrictions will occur only during hours of construction potentially from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily.
The work on DP Rd is related to the Canyon Walk Apartments and The Bluffs senior housing (under construction). The roadway reconstruction included installation of curb and gutter, sidewalks and paving of the roadway, the bulk of which was completed fall 2021.All remaining construction activities related to the reconstruction of DP Rd are expected to be completed by the end of August 2022 (weather permitting).
Traffic & Streets Projects:

Turn Lane Arrow Painting on State Road 4 in White Rock
Crews will continue installing turn lane arrows at turn lanes in White Rock on SR 4. Crews will set up a flagging operation and may intermittently shift lanes as needed. Vehicle traffic is urged to slow down in this location and follow all traffic control devices and watch for flaggers.
Asphalt Patching on Bathtub Row
Crews will continue patching a section of asphalt on Bathtub Row. The northbound lane will be closed, and a flagging operation will be in place. The work should be completed by August 23 by 4:00 p.m.
Asphalt Patching at the intersection of La Senda and Piedra Ct.
Wednesday, August 24 crews will be patching a utility cut at the intersection of La Senda and Piedra Ct from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. A flagging operation will be in place.
Rover Blvd Concrete Work
Wednesday, August 24, beginning at 8:00 a.m., crews will be replacing a section of sidewalk at 405 Rover Blvd. The sidewalk will be closed temporarily, and pedestrians will be detoured at Glenview and Kimberly Ln. There will not be any impact to vehicle traffic.
Non-County Projects:
The following road construction updates are posted below in the interest of keeping residents informed but are being managed or conducted by others. Please obey all traffic devices and slowdown in work zones.
LAPS Foundation Hilltopper 5K Run/Walk
LAPS Foundation will be hosting a 5K race, managed by TCR Productions, on Sunday, August 21 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The race route will start at the intersection of NM502 and Canyon Rd, proceed along Canyon to Central Ave, turn around and return along Canyon to 4th St, where it will turn south (right) to Central, before turning west (right) on Central and finishing at the Co-op Park at the intersection of Central and Knecht St.
Vehicles are asked to slow down in the area of the event and watch for participants. LAPD will be assisting with traffic management as needed.
