Dr. Feryal Özel accepts a J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee plaque from Committee Chair Tom Ribe Friday evening following her lecture ‘Black Holes: From Oppenheimer’s Ideas to the First Direct Images’. She discussed how a century-long quest culminated in the first ever images of supermassive black holes with the Event Horizon Telescope. With these images, the existence of black holes can be confirmed and the performance of unprecedented tests of the theory of General Relativity can be performed. A dinner was held Thursday evening at Cottonwood on the Greens that was attended by Özel, her daughter Celin, recipients of the 2022 JROMC scholarships and JROMC board members. In addition, a reception was held in Özel’s honor following the lecture. Photo by Maire O’Neill/losalamosreporter.co
