The Los Alamos Federation of School Employees (LAFSE) begins its 29th year of serving Los Alamos Public Schools’ (LAPS) employees by sponsoring a free Los Alamos Summer Concert on Aug. 5. Los Alamos favorites Katy P and the Business will open at Ashley Pond followed by headliner The Wildflowers, the #1 touring Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers tribute band in the United States.

This free concert follows most LAPS employees’ return to work on Aug. 3 and precedes the return of LAPS students on Aug. 10.

“We are excited to welcome all families, students, community members, staff, and especially LAFSE members, back with this event,” said LAFSE Co-Presidents Trey Pereyra and Stacy Martens.

“LAPS educators are committed and passionate individuals who love working with students. Right now, they are writing new lessons, decorating classrooms, enrolling new students, and making plans that will help their students have a great year. LAFSE wants to support educators so that they can continue to serve our students and their families to the best of their abilities” said Secilli Keeler, LAFSE Vice President of Certified Staff.

“As educator morale across the nation fluctuates, it is important to celebrate the amazing work that educators–including instructional assistants, secretaries, custodians, and bus drivers in addition to classroom teachers, counselors, and librarians–do in this school district. LAFSE is proud to do its part to make educators feel valued and seen,” said Martens.

LAFSE will hold raffles and drawings that existing union members and potential members–any LAPS employee excluding contractors, substitutes, coaches, and administrators–can enter. Members who wear their LAFSE t-shirts will get a special prize. Prizes were generously donated from local businesses such as the Bathtub Row Brewery, the Boese Brothers Brewery, Zia Realty Group, and EXIT Realty Advantage NM.

“We really appreciate how much Los Alamos businesses and community members support educators and our local union,” said LAFSE Secretary Taylor Pomeroy.

“We thank the New Mexico Federation of Labor for their continued support of professional organizations and labor unions. This is also the second year that LAFSE has partnered with Pablo Irlando-Wildman and Monica Griego, the CEOs of Sancre Productions, who are steadfast supporters of our local union and its members. Their contributions made this celebration of educators possible,” said Co-President Pereyra.

“Additionally, President Whitney Holland of the American Federation of Teachers New Mexico (AFT NM) has been a constant champion of educators and supporter of LAFSE. We are proud to have AFT NM’s continued support of educators and their representation at this event.”

Co-Presidents Pereya and Martens look forward to another year of working hand in hand with LAPS administration to provide the best working environment for employees and an excellent education for students.
